Rural Youth Centres are at the heart of what Help the Rural Child is about.
A safe place and vibrant environment for health and education programmes to take place, a focus and resource for rural communities to participate in so many different activities. We work in partnership to build Centres targeting rural communities where we know the greater majority of children have substantial needs.
By building a Centre in local townships we position ourselves at the heart of the need and we can provide services for children right where they live without involving transportation, complicated logistics or fuel costs. Our new Riebeeck Kasteel Rural Youth Centre at Esterhof opening in 2010 (pictured) will be supported by key workers all of whom will have undergone extensive training in youth work, some of them having come up through the programme themselves. And our kitchens will be staffed by cooks from the local community who will provide nourishing and healthy meals for all the children coming to the centre. Not only does this provide employment, training and career development for local people but a Rural Youth Centre is also a second home for the children of poor communities - a place of sanctuary with creative and challenging activities to engage and motivate them.
A Rural Youth Centre is a place to go to where homework and school projects can be completed away from the very cramped and noisy conditions so often found in rural workers’ homes.
Help the Rural Child’s commitment is to provide the ongoing revenue funding required year in and year out that enables the Centres to remain open and serving the community. In trying to meet that challenge we need your support. |
