Fresh Organix – a gardening project growing fresh vegetables to improve children’s diets.
The diet that many rural children have is often very poor - poor in variety, poor in nutrition and often actively bad for health. The prime reasons for poor diet are of course poverty and lack of knowledge about healthy eating. We do our best to encourage healthier eating habits but, recognising the problems involved at home for the majority of the children, we set out to provide a healthy meal every day for all those children coming to our Rural Youth Centres. Making that meal as nutritious as possible is a key objective and by growing our own produce we can be sure that a high percentage of what the children eat is organic and truly health giving. We can also use the garden to teach children about growing and looking after vegetables – a recent survey in Britain showed that 93% of children who are exposed to growing their own from primary school age start to change their eating habits |
